Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is the most common cause of tooth loss among adults.

Here at LIFESmiles Dental, our team strives to help our patients prevent periodontal disease. Be sure to visit our office if you have any of the following warning signs: gums that are tender, red, swollen or bleed easily; gums that have pulled away from the teeth; persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth; permanent teeth that are loose or separating; and changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite. These are all worrisome signs that your oral health may be under attack from periodontal disease.

Most periodontal diseases are technically a combination of various infections that are associated with particular groups of bacteria. Gum tissue forms a seal around the tooth, but if there is any contamination on the tooth’s surface, the gum tissue will not seal against the tooth. When this happens, the jawbone and root of the tooth are vulnerable to bacterial onslaughts.

Periodontal disease can progress into full-blown periodontitis, which is a disease that occurs when there is a breakdown in the seal between the gum and the tooth. Bacteria get below the gum tissue seal and around a tooth, and they begin to destroy the part of the jawbone that anchors the teeth.

So, if you suffer from advanced periodontitis, the bone loss around your teeth can quickly become severe. So, it’s very important that you call 208-377-2160 to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. LIFESmiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is here to provide exceptional care for you and your family.
