Losing a tooth can feel like a big deal. Maybe it happened recently, or maybe you have been living with a gap for years. Either way, you probably have questions about the dental implant process. Does it hurt? How long does it take? Is it worth it?
We hear these questions a lot here at our West Boise office. And the honest answer is: dental implants are one of the best investments you can make in your smile. But they are also a process. Let us walk you through it step by step, so you know exactly what to expect.

What Is a Dental Implant, Really?
Think of it as a replacement root. A small titanium post is placed gently into your jawbone. Over time, that post fuses with the bone, just like a natural tooth root would. On top of that post, we attach a custom-made crown that looks and feels like your real tooth.
Unlike a bridge, an implant does not rely on the teeth next to it for support. Unlike dentures, it does not slip or click. It stands on its own.
The Step-by-Step Timeline
Every patient is different, but here is what a typical implant journey looks like at LifeSmiles.
- The Conversation: We start with a chat. Dr. Garpetti or Dr. Hyder will examine your smile, take some digital images, and ask about your goals. Not everyone needs a bone graft or a complex plan. We will tell you exactly what your unique situation requires. No surprises.
- The Placement: This is the main event. You will receive numbing or sedation, whatever makes you most comfortable. Then, we gently place the titanium post into your jawbone. Most patients tell us the procedure felt easier than a tooth extraction.
- The Healing: Then comes the waiting. Your jawbone needs time to heal and grow around the post. This takes a few months, but you go about your normal life during this time. You are not walking around with a hole in your smile.
- The Connector: Once the implant is firmly fused with your bone, we place a small connector called an abutment on top of the post. This is a quick, minor step. It simply gets the implant ready to hold your new tooth.
- The New Tooth: Finally, we attach your custom crown. We match the color to your surrounding teeth so no one can tell the difference, sometimes not even you.
How Long Does the Whole Thing Take?
From start to finish, the process usually takes four to nine months. Most of that time is healing, not appointments. You are not in the dental chair for hours on end. You are just living your life while your body does the work of accepting the implant.
Does It Hurt?
We will be honest with you: there is some discomfort after the placement, similar to having a tooth pulled. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually do the trick. Most patients tell us the worry was far worse than the reality.
And remember: we offer sedation if you are feeling nervous. You could literally sleep through the whole thing.
Why Go Through All of This?
Because an implant works like a real tooth. It stays in place. It lets you chew normally. And it prevents the bone loss that happens when a tooth is missing for too long. And with good care, it can last a lifetime.
