We’re breaking it all down here at LifeSmiles. No fancy jargon. No hard sell. Just the honest truth about teeth whitening options, from the cheap stuff to the professional treatments.

Option 1: Drugstore Whitening Strips

What they are: Thin, flexible plastic strips coated with a peroxide gel. You stick ’em on your teeth for 20–30 minutes a day, usually for a week or two.

What’s good: They’re cheap (usually $20–$50). You can buy them anywhere. And they can work a little bit.

What’s not so good: The strips don’t fit perfectly, so the gel can leak onto your gums. That stings. They also can’t reach between your teeth, so you might end up with darker spots in the gaps. Plus, the results are pretty mild compared to professional options.

Drugstore whitening strips are fine for a quick touch-up, but not great for serious staining.

Option 2: Whitening Toothpastes & Rinses

What they are: Regular toothpaste or mouthwash with mild abrasives or tiny amounts of peroxide.

What’s good: Super cheap. No effort; you’re already brushing and rinsing anyway.

What’s not so good: They barely work. These products mostly scrub off surface stains from coffee or tea. They won’t change your natural tooth color at all. If you’re expecting dramatic results, you’ll be disappointed.

Whitening toothpaste can be good for maintenance after professional whitening, but it’s not a real solution on its own.

Option 3: Over-the-Counter Trays

What they are: Boil-and-bite trays you soften in hot water, then mold to your teeth. You fill them with gel and wear them for an hour or overnight.

What’s good: Better coverage than strips. You can find them for $30–$60.

What’s not so good: The fit is still pretty lousy. That means more gel leaks onto your gums, which hurts. The gel is also weaker than what dentists use, so results take longer and don’t last as long.

OTC trays are a step up from strips, but still a distant second to professional trays.

Option 4: In-Office Whitening

What it is: You come sit in our comfortable West Boise office. We protect your gums. Then we apply a professional-strength whitening gel and activate it with a special light. You’re done in about an hour.

What’s good: It’s fast. You could walk in with stained teeth and walk out with a smile that’s several shades brighter. We control everything, so there’s no gum irritation. And the results are often dramatic.

What’s not so good: It costs more than drugstore options. (But you’re paying for results that actually work.)

Professional in-office whitening is the best choice if you want it done right and done now, perfect for before a wedding, reunion, or job interview.

Option 5: Custom Take-Home Trays from Your Dentist

What they are: We take digital images of your teeth and create custom trays that fit like a glove. You take them home with professional-strength gel and whiten on your own schedule.

What’s good: The fit is perfect, so no gel leaks onto your gums. The gel is way stronger than anything you can buy at the store. You could whiten while you watch TV or sleep.

What’s not so good: It takes longer than in-office whitening, usually a couple of weeks of daily wear.
