How Does CEREC Work?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. But you don’t need to remember that. All you need to know is it’s pretty cool. Here’s what happens:
- Prep: Just like with a traditional crown, we start by numbing you and preparing your tooth. Dr. Garpetti or Dr. Hyder will gently shape the tooth so the crown fits perfectly.
- Digital Imaging: Instead of goopy impression material, we use a small wand to take digital pictures of your tooth. It’s quick and comfortable. No gagging. No waiting for stuff to set.
- Design: Those digital images go into our CEREC software. In just a few minutes, we design your custom crown right there on the screen. You can even see what it’s going to look like before we make it.
- Milling: We send that design to our in-office milling machine. It carves your crown out of a solid block of ceramic material while you wait. It takes about 15 minutes.
- Bonding: We check the fit, make any tiny adjustments, and bond your new crown permanently in place. You’re done.
Does It Hurt?
You’ll get numbed just like you would for a filling. Once that wears off, you might have some mild sensitivity for a day or two. That’s normal. Most patients tell us it felt easier than they expected.
