You’ve booked your first cleaning at LifeSmiles Laser & Cosmetic Dentistry. It may have been a while since your last visit. Maybe you’re new to the area. Or maybe you just like to know what’s coming. Either way, we’re glad you’re here. And we want you to walk in feeling calm, not nervous.
A routine cleaning isn’t a big mystery. It’s actually pretty straightforward. So let’s pull back the curtain and show you exactly what happens, step by step.

Before You Arrive
New patients can complete paperwork online before their appointment. That means you won’t be stuck in the waiting room with a clipboard. You just show up, and we’ll take it from there.
If you’ve got dental insurance, bring your card. If you don’t, no worries. We’ll talk through payment options so there are no surprises.
Step 1: The Welcome
When you walk in, our front desk team will greet you. They’re friendly. They’re warm. And they’re genuinely happy you’re here.
If you’re new, you’ll get a quick tour of the office. Many patients tell us they love seeing the technology we use. It helps them understand why their visit feels different. Then it’s back to the chair.
Step 2: The Chat
Before anything happens, your hygienist will sit down and talk with you. They’ll ask about your health history, any medications you take, and whether you’ve had any dental issues lately.
This is your time to speak up. Nervous about something? Tell us. Sensitive teeth? Let us know. We’ll adjust everything to make you comfortable.
Step 3: The Exam
Dr. Garpetti or Dr. Hyder will examine your teeth and gums. They’re checking for cavities, gum disease, and anything else that needs attention. If you need X-rays, we’ll take them. Our digital X-rays are fast and use far less radiation than old film X-rays.
Step 4: The Cleaning Itself
- Your hygienist will use a small tool to gently scrape away plaque and tartar from your teeth, especially near the gumline. Don’t worry. It’s not painful. It might feel a little scratchy, but that’s normal.
- Next comes the polishing. That’s the gritty toothpaste that leaves your teeth feeling smooth and clean.
- Then they’ll floss between each tooth.
- Finally, they’ll rinse your mouth out. You’re almost done.
Step 5: The Fluoride
Most cleanings end with a fluoride treatment. It’s a quick gel or foam that strengthens your enamel and helps prevent cavities. It comes in different flavors, so pick your favorite. You’ll just need to avoid eating or drinking for a few minutes after your appointment.
Step 6: The Recap
Before you leave, your dentist will go over what they found. If everything looks good, great. If something needs monitoring, they’ll tell you.
No pressure. No scare tactics. Just honest information so you can make good choices for your smile.
How Long Does It Take?
A routine cleaning usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. If it’s been a while since your last visit, it might take a little longer. That’s fine. We’re not in a rush.
Does It Hurt?
Nope. A cleaning shouldn’t hurt. You might feel some pressure or mild sensitivity, but nothing sharp. If you’ve got sensitive gums, tell your hygienist. They’ll be extra gentle.
How Often Should You Come In?
Most patients come every six months. Some need to come more often, some less. We’ll recommend a schedule based on your specific needs.
